An essential duty in any military encampment or fortified position. An officer would oversee a guard detail, supported by a serjeant. Guards were posted by the Corporal of the Guard.
Guard Duty, Havana, Cuba 1762.
It is interesting to note that the Regiment was indeed there in 1762 and its Colonel drowned during the siege to take Havana which elevated Gage to that role. By 1763 Havana was returned to the Spanish and the Regiment would find itself in (of all places) Alabama, with Gage on duty in New York.
