During the later half of the 18th century, fifes and drums had become a regular part of the army establishment. These vital members of the battalion would use their instruments to send signals helping to regulate the army's day across large encampments and organize its maneuvers when on the move. Additionally, these specialists would entertain beyond the official work day as music was an important part of everyday life before the advent of modern communications.
There being no radio, television or phones, an important part of 18th century entertainment would have included live music. Naturally, some fifers and drummers would have been part of off-duty musical entertainment.
